Salim Ndegwa Chiro

My name is Salim Ndegwa Chiro. I come from Chengoni village, Kinango district, in Kenya. I am the first born aged 26 years in a family of six children.

I attended Chengoni Primary school from the year 1989 alongside Madrasah classes where I was taught basic fundamentals of the religion of Islam. Reports from both institutions (Madrasah and Secular School) reflected my hard work. This was proved right when I finally passed my Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (K.C.P.E) with flying colours despite adverse economic situation that is evident in that area.

Through the sponsorship of Zainabiyya Child Sponsorship Scheme (ZCSS) via Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya my dream of pursuing high school education was realized. Therefore, in the year 1998, I was admitted at Al Rasul Al Akram Academy, Nairobi.

It is during my time in Al Rasul Al Akram Academy that I came to taste the excruciating pain of poverty. This was so because; in this school I came into contact with children from rich families of diverse nationality. Realizing how financially disadvantaged I was, I vowed to fight poverty and dependency to attain financial freedom. And so that became my vision even right now; that in future I would like to see this mujtama (society) able to manage its own financial hiccups through education.

Alhamdullilahi, having worked hard in high school and eventually passed well, I managed to undertake a Diploma in Mass Communication (Radio and Television option) at the Mombasa Polytechnic University College under the sponsorship of Bilal Loan Education Sponsorship Scheme (BLESS) from the year 2004 – 2006.

Currently I am working with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, Mombasa, as a radio producer.

Taking education as the key to success, I have been very instrumental in coming up with educative and informative radio programmes that assist students to perform even better, notably Fasihi na Jamii – a programme that analyses literature in secondary schools.

Besides, I pay school fees for my two sisters in high school namely, Halima Chiro who is currently in her second year and Sakina Chiro who is in her first year. This is in line with my vision.

Moreover, I am taking care of my aging parents and the whole family at large as is required by the teachings of Islam and our African traditions.

To this end I will not have done justice if I will not sincerely thank all the donors who have taken me this far. ZCSS, BLESS and Bilal Muslim Mission of Kenya are and will remain the key contributors of my success.

My Allah (S.W.T) reward you abundantly. And may these deeds that you do unto poor children be the cause of getting forgiveness from Allah (S.W.T) in the form of Sadaqatu Jaariya.

May Allah Bless Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and his Progeny - Ahlul Bayt (A.S).

Alhamdulillahi.
