Activities

I am leaving among you two weighty things: the Book of God and my Ahlul Bayt. If you hold fast to them, you will never go astray after me.’
Prophet Muhammad (SAWW)

Guided by this profound tradition, our Tabligh initiatives seek to disseminate the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the noble Ahlul Bayt (AS) in a manner that is both accessible and transformative.

Our vision is to foster confident, spiritually grounded Shia communities enriched by the wisdom of the Thaqalayn. Through easily accessible and structured religious education, congregational worship, the commemoration of important historical events and various other activities, we are committed to cultivating informed, resilient, and faith-driven Muslim societies.

IMAM RIDHA EDUCATIONAL COMPLEX – Mtongwe

The Imam Ridha Educational Complex, established in early 2023 at Imam Ridha Bilal Centre in Mtongwe, is a dedicated initiative that integrates Islamic scholarship with academic instruction and essential support services for students.

A nurturing environment provides vocational training in a range of disciplines from motor vehicle mechanics to hospitality management whilst students simultaneously undertake studies in Islamic Law and History, Arabic Language, the Holy Qur’an, Dua recitation and more. Daily routine is centred around Salaah time. Students receive meals, accommodation and access to extracurricular activities.

This institution therefore serves as a centre of learning and a space for spiritual transformation, committed to shaping disciplined, knowledgeable and purpose-driven individuals.

OUR MADARIS

Our madaris for children are a central component at all our rural centres. Children attend the madaris on Saturdays and Sundays, with additional weekday classes during the school holidays. 2,530 children are currently enrolled in our madaris programs, receiving essential instruction in Fiqh, History, Aqaid, Akhlaq and the holy Qur’an. We also run classes for ladies on Friday afternoons.

Zahra Madrasa in Mombasa hosts a class on Saturday mornings. This madrasa also presents a wonderful programme once a year to celebrate the Lives of Lady Zahra (a.s) and Lady Zaynab (a.s). The line-up includes informative quizzes, entertaining plays, speeches and qasidas.

Through a special outreach program, our madaris teachers conduct special Islamic Religious Education classes at public primary schools in their vicinity. This gives us the opportunity to teach Islam correctly to young impressionable minds. Presently, 4,143 children are taught Islamic Studies according to the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the Ahlulbayt in various rural public schools.

All sessions play a vital role in nurturing religious knowledge, moral values and a strong sense of identity, empowering learners of all ages to live by the teachings of the Ahlul Bayt (AS). They serve to foster individual growth as well as strengthening the spiritual fabric of the communities we serve.

OUR MASAJID

Each of our 16 community centres features an active masjid where congregational prayers are held daily. In recent years, we have renovated these masajid to improve ventilation, lighting and overall comfort—ensuring they remain dignified and welcoming environments for all.

Daily salaah forms the heart of activity at our masajid. Weekly programs include the recitation of Du’a Kumayl on Thursdays and Du’a Tawassul on Tuesdays. Throughout the Islamic calendar, the masajid also host commemorations of the Ahlul Bayt (AS), with peak engagement during Muharram, Safar and the Holy Month of Ramadhan.

These are not only places of worship—they serve as centres for learning, mentorship and spiritual growth. Women, youth, and families regularly participate in programs held within the masajid, creating strong bonds of faith and community.

MUHARRAM AND SAFAR

The months of Muharram and Safar draw exceptional engagement at all our centres and Independent centres we support. At over 40 locations, daily majalis during the first ten days honour the pristine sacrifices of Imam Husayn (a.s) and his family and companions on the plains of Kerbala. In Mombasa, ladies and gents majalis are livestreamed to allow wider participation.  We also offer interactive lectures and classes for ladies via zoom.

Gatherings continue up to the day of Arbaeen, with special sessions in remembrance of Imam Sajjad (a.s) and Lady Zaynab (a.s) whose strength and steadfastness carried forward the mission of Kerbala.

These majalis are commemorative, drawing active participation from youth, ladies and gents; and equally, the gatherings provide opportunities to attendees for seeking knowledge, refining one’s character and strengthening Imaan.

Other forms of expressing solidarity with Imam Husayn (a.s) and is party of Allah (swt) include processions and a blood drive hosted at the Ar-Ridha Centre in Mtongwe – a gesture of giving life in memory of those who gave theirs.

HOLY RAMADHAN AND EID UL FITR

A compassionate global community comes together in the holy month of Ramadhan, making it a very busy and meaningful time of the year at our mission. Generous support from our partners and well-wishers means that we can carry out several crucial programs at a large scale. The impact is felt by a wide range of beneficiaries, including thousands of families in rural Kenya and in some urban centres.

One of the core efforts during the month is the distribution of food parcels. Keeping in mind local needs and preferences, large food parcels are handed over to families at over 40 rural centres and in cities like Mombasa and Nairobi. This support is crucial and provides some ease to breadwinners during this blessed month and beyond.

Additionally, Iftaar staples are provided to community centres, secondary schools and prisons, allowing these institutions to prepare and serve Iftaar after maghribayn salaah. Duas and prayers taught to us by the immaculate Ahlulbayt and inspiring lectures, are a key feature in nightly worship at the centres, with Layaalul-ul-Qadr attracting large numbers of devotees. During Layaalul Qadr, Bilal Kenya centres also receive extra supplies including meat, enabling Suhoor to be served to worshippers.

Well-organized online lectures streamed on our you tube channel feature discussions in Quranic study and important historical events and figures for the benefit of a wider audience.

Our annual Qur’an competition draws participation from students, teachers and community members at large. The finale is conducted over Zoom highlighting the best performers from each centre. The winners are recognized for their excellence and dedication.

For Eid, Orphans receive new clothes and shoes, whilst widows are supported with cash gifts. Prayers and Eid Lunch are held at all Bilal Centres – communities come together joyfully to pray for acceptance of their deeds and mark the culmination of the fasting month as they share nutritious lunches.
